Every time I have a session, location is probably the biggest question. Since I cover such a large geographic area for weddings and engagements (Rochester to Syracuse, Oswego to Ithaca, all the way from the lakeshore to the glens) the possibilities are endless! We live in such a diverse and breathtaking area. Nicole and Rick love being outdoors, and Nicole mentioned to me that early in her planning process, she had wanted to use a boat in her engagement photos. Since neither of us had a boat, beautiful Boughton Park in Bloomfield, with it’s forests, lake, and dock areas was a nice spot for the wooded nature-inspired photos she was looking for.
Fast forward to session day – the most gorgeous sunshine filled early summer evening you could possibly imagine. The sun drenched the air with golden light. Dust and shadows added depth and this couple’s love filled the woods like the sweet summertime heat.
After a bit, we went down to the dock to photograph some right on the edge of the water. I’m not sure what stroke of genius or maybe insanity grabbed me, but I shouted “hold on a sec, I’ve got an idea” (famous last words I know.) I darted down to the waterside and ran up to another couple who was just pulling their canoe into the dock. I asked if we could borrow it for a few quick shots… poor Nicole and Rick had no idea what I was doing.
Hey, I figure the worst they could say was no, right?
Of course they didn’t. I would have had to title this post “the one where I *almost* borrowed a canoe” or “the one where a couple turned me down so I stole a canoe” if they had said no.
But they said yes. 🙂
After the canoe shenanigans, we started to lose light in the woods, so we drove down the road to a pretty sunset overlook. I am always amazed at the variety that can be created just by pointing the camera in a different direction. Light is amazing. The sky is amazing. Love is super-amazing.
